Periodontics

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the health of tissues around your teeth, including the gums and the jawbone. It also involves preventive care, treatments, and regenerative procedures for tissues around the teeth.

Periodontists are dentists who specialize in periodontics. They treat oral health issues that affect parts of your mouth, such as the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone.

Some standard procedures our periodontists perform include:

Periodontal maintenance

This includes the cleaning of your teeth. But beyond that, we’ll check your gum health and measure the pocket around your teeth.

Thereby, we can ensure that the tissues are in excellent condition. You can visit us every three to four months for periodontal maintenance.

Scaling and root planing

This is a form of deep dental cleaning below the gum line. To ensure that you feel no pain during the cleaning, we will incorporate local anesthesia. Scaling and root planing are often done for patients with gum disease at an early stage.

Gingivitis treatment

Gingivitis is a mild gum disease that causes swelling of the gums around the base of your teeth. People who have gingivitis can experience swollen gums, bleeding in the gums, receding gums, bad breath, and more.

Once you notice these symptoms, you can schedule an appointment with us for a checkup.

Periodontitis treatment

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that can damage the gums and jawbone. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Some common symptoms include bleeding of the gums, painful chewing, and pus between the teeth and gums.

For patients with these symptoms, we offer treatments and we will also educate them on preventive measures.

Periodontal surgery

Periodontists often perform surgeries to eliminate problems that affect the tissues around the teeth. Some periodontal surgeries that we perform at The Schiff & Moniz Dental Group include pocket reduction, gum grafts, tooth extractions, dental bone grafts, and surgical crown lengthening.

Beyond that, periodontists can place dental implants for tooth replacement. For optimum comfort, we provide sedation dentistry during these procedures.

If you are feeling pain around your gums, or if you are in need of preventive care, then you may schedule an appointment with Dr. Reza Hakim Shoushtari, one of the recognized periodontists in Pennsylvania, for optimum oral care.
